Competition Karting

Member Profile:

In 1959, during karting’s early beginnings, Competition Karting, Inc. had its early beginnings as well. Current co-owner Dan Klutz worked for Doss & Sons of Winston-Salem, NC, and began servicing the early kart engines due to Doss & Sons’ dealer arrangements with McCulloch Chain Saws.By 1973, the karting business became large enough to open a division of Doss & Sons Saws, then known as Competition Karting Specialties.

By 1978, Klutz and current partner Lewis Dowell bought Competition Karting Sales and renamed it Competition Karting, Inc.A 6000 square foot nondescript building with creaky, wooden floors near downtown Winston-Salem served CKI for 34 years. From that building CKI grew to become a major retailer and wholesaler of karts and kart products. The expansion of CKI’s business during the 1980s into more national mail-order sales and dealer distribution prompted the move into an ultra modern 15,000 square foot facility in Welcome, NC, just south of Winston-Salem.

Located in the Welcome Industrial Park, CKI now enjoys a larger retail showroom, loading docks, expansive office space in addition to all the warehouse space. Developed by Richard Childress, the Welcome Industrial Park is also home to Richard Childress Racing NASCAR race team headquarters.

CKI was built on a nearly 4 acre site in the rear of the development. CKI supports national karting events with a well-stocked parts store on wheels and relies on local dealers to handle the parts reselling duties at the local tracks in the Carolinas.
